‘Heartless’ was Heartbreaking for 'Teen Wolf' Fans[]

If there was a theme running through ‘’Heartless’’ it was this – Stiles at any cost. While there was drama aplenty in the plan to capture a Ghost Rider and in the unorthodox snacking habits of Garrett Douglas, the heart of ‘’Heartless’’ is Stiles and just how far his friends are willing to go to bring him back. Scott, Malia, and Lydia each stated outright the importance of finding and retrieving him but it was a collection of emotional scenes featuring Lydia and Noah Stilinski that hit fans the hardest.

Having found Stiles’ empty room sealed up with drywall and wallpaper, Stilinski is no longer sure he never had a son. His wife pushes him to forget about the room and “phantom son” but his doubt persists. Meanwhile, Lydia begins to believe Claudia isn’t real and confronts the Sheriff about it in Stiles’ room. The scene played out slowly, with Lydia suddenly able to see all the things that should be there, Stiles' bed, his investigation board, and other items she can now remember. The Sheriff sees none of it and claws tightly at his doubt.

The scenes required Holland Roden and Linden Ashby to flash between dozens of conflicting emotions all at once, a feat they performed masterfully. The script (by veteran TV writer Antoinette Stella) danced delicately over the complex issues of madness, grief and self-delusion while Director Kate Eastridge found all the right places for the camera to move in or linger in close-up to drive home the depths of each character’s desperation.

I spoke to Eastridge on Wednesday about the episode and the performances.

"When Lydia starts to see Stiles’ things, it hits me in the gut every time," she says. "The jersey scene, I catch my breath when she tentatively reaches out to touch it and IT’S REAL! Her reverence when picking it up like it’s the most precious thing in the world, then being overcome with how close she is to Stiles yet how much she misses him. The hope in her eyes when she first turns to show it to Stilinski, Holland was mesmeric."

Eastridge is no stranger to diving into the emotional depths with these characters. In last season's The Sword and the Spirit she directed similarly weighty scenes as Jordan Parrish realized just how complicit he was in hiding all the murders committed by The Beast and Lydia's helplessness in knowing Malia is in danger without the capacity to reach her.

Eastridge's work is one of the reasons Teen Wolf often elevates beyond the "teen drama" genre. Her work with Ashby in Stiles' room delved deeply into some very complex and very adult issues.

"Stilinski was presented with confusing and overwhelming new information in this episode," she explains. He has to process the existence of a room that shouldn’t exist and being told that he has a phantom wife who is preventing him from remembering the truth: he has a son, whom he has to remember in order to save him. Linden traverses all of this adeptly by grounding each reaction. His struggle to reconcile these strange occurrences and logic is heartbreaking.

All that hard work paid off spectacularly with one of the series' most memorable and touching episodes. Here’s just a sampling of the reaction that was still coming in a full twelve hours after the scenes in Stiles’ room aired.

@justtwtbh - Lydia never stopped looking, her faith helped her see Stiles's room and even convince his dad and I love her so much for it 💞 #TeenWolf
@lovatostw  - IM CRYING LYDIA LOVES STILES SO MUCH
@Eyamedina96  - Yes Sheriff you have a son. 'Somebody' please bring 'stiles' back. He's all he has 😭
@kiefer_davies  - Omg that give me chills when Lydia threw stiles lacrosse shirt to his dad and he caught it @MTVteenwolf looks like sheriff is remembering 😁
@M_STILINSKI  - the loss of stiles is so intense for the sheriff that he conjured up his dead wife just to cope i'm fine

Now that everyone knows just what and who Garrett Douglas really is, Blitzkrieg seems poised to explore his background a bit more. We learned in Heartless that he’s run into the Ghost Riders before and he knows how to use their tools to make people disappear. His eyes are also now seafoam green which can’t be a good sign.

Saintgnue Assault Trial Postponed Again[]

Teen Wolf Cody Saintgnue will wait a little longer for his day in court. A judge in Las Vegas this week postponed the actor’s civil suit against the Mirage Hotel and Casino after a flurry of motions to exclude evidence that suggests casinos regularly have their guests roughed up. Saintgnue claims Mirage employees assaulted him and held him against his will after he refused to pay a bill for services he did not receive. Surveillance video shows much of the 2014 incident.

On January 5, Judge Michelle Leavitt canceled the scheduled trial date of February 7. She did not reschedule but plans to hear arguments for summary judgment on February 13. Leavitt’s move came after motions from the Mirage asking that she exclude from evidence movies and books that purport to show a pattern of violence against casino patrons by thuggish employees. The motion says the works might be, “irrelevant, inadmissible or prejudicial.”

Just Like in the Movies?[]

While the motion wants “works of fiction” kept out of the courtroom in general, it specifically names the 1995 Martin Scorsese film Casino and Attorney Robert Nerseian’s book “Beat the Players”. The former is a work of historical fiction in which uniformed casino security beat up someone suspected of cheating.

Robert Nerseian’s book purports to be true and apparently shows “the extent of the manipulation and corruption of security guards working at gambling establishments” as well as other examples of how casinos detain and interrogate their guests. Nerseian often sues casinos on behalf of card-counters or “advantage players” as they prefer to be known. He relates many of his real-life cases in the book.

While Saintgnue is seen on video getting roughed up by security and led away to a casino “back room” like in the movie, his case is not exactly like those presented in either of the cited works. Saintgnue claims he wasn’t doing anything wrong. He wasn’t even gambling.

Saintgnue’s Hellish Night[]

According to the lawsuit filed 20 months ago, Saintgnue went to Vegas to celebrate his birthday with family and friends. They had dinner and then moved on to the 1 OAK nightclub inside the Mirage. During the evening, employees approached the actor and asked him to visit a private party in the 1 OAK VIP section. After a few moments in the VIP section, he left to rejoin his friends. That’s when things got hinky according to the lawsuit.

"As he left the VIP section, it quickly became obvious that this was no mere invitation without strings as plaintiff understood, but rather, plaintiff was apparently expected to remain with the party for the balance of the evening, and possibly thereafter."

According to his attorney’s filing Saintgnue understands now that club employees were soliciting him to be “the guest or date of the man in the VIP section.”

The lawsuit alleges that the actor did not realize what was happening, "As an aside, plaintiff is straight, young, and again, naive, and completely failed to recognize any such overtones to the invitation or acceptance of the invitation, and thought it was a polite social interchange,"

The Shakedown[]

After Saintgnue had left the party, he was approached by club employees and told he would have to pay hundreds of dollars for VIP service he had not requested. They then escorted him into a back hallway where security personnel from the Mirage casino restrained him against his will for hours.

The surveillance footage above only shows part of the exchange. As Saintgnue tried to shoot a cell phone video, security officers slammed him against a wall and tackled him to the ground. The lawsuit uses more colorful language to describe the exchange. “…the imprisonment and beatings of the plaintiff were nothing more than an attempted shakedown, theft, and robbery of the plaintiff.”

This week's action marks the second time Judge Leavitt delayed proceedings. The trial, initially set for November of last year, is now off the calendar altogether. Leavitt will hear arguments January 30 on the motions to exclude “works of fiction” as well as a motion from Saintgnue’s  attorney to keep the Mirage’s “security expert” from testifying.

Khylin Rhambo: Wise Beyond his Years[]

Teen Wolf actor Khylin Rhambo celebrates 21 years on the planet this week. If you’ve ever met him, you know how humble and kind he really is. If you follow him on social media, you know how smart and insightful he can be. In honor of his birthday, Teen Wolf News put together a list of 21 statements that show Khylin Rhambo is wise beyond his years.

Shelley Hennig’s Hardcore Happy Birthday[]

Teen Coyote Shelley Hennig celebrated her birthday this past weekend. Hennig was actually born on January 2, but with all the post-holiday holdover, she waited till this past weekend to celebrate. She was joined by personal friends as well as the stars and crew of Teen Wolf and some MTV executives for a country hoedown of sorts in Los Angeles. It appears, at least from the party photo gallery, that a good time was had by all.
