Teen Wolf’s Winter Start

After months of delays, we finally have a firm (firmish) start date for production on Teen Wolf Season 5.

Speaking to BLEEP, an online entertainment magazine, actor Matthew Del Negro says he’ll be returning to the Teen Wolf set in Northridge, California in February. Other sources close to the production say cameras will roll in “late January or early February” for the first of 20 new episodes. This is a two month delay based on earlier reports from Tyler Posey that production was originally slated to ramp up in December.

There were fears that the late start might hurt Teen Wolf's $46,317,491 budget, specifically the $11.5 million the State of California is giving the show via state tax credits. One of the requirements to get that state money is that production begins within the budget year in which the credits were approved.

Teen Wolf Wikia incorrectly reported that this meant Teen Wolf producers needed to start production before the end of the calendar year or they would lose those credits. We have now learned that the deadline follows the California “Fiscal Year” which begins in July and ends in June. This means the show is in no danger of losing the state money as long as cameras roll before the end of June 2015.

As we’ve reported previously, the Teen Wolf writers are hard at work already. So far, nothing of substance is leaking from the writer’s room as far as what the theme or focus for Season 5 will be.

All we’ve heard from the writers so far is comments about the snacks at Teen Wolf HQ.

@IanStokes82 - Back after 3 month break and the sad #teenwolf office fridge is nothing but old guacamole and edible blood
@nationsfilm - Is it weird that the writer's room snack cabinet is full of kale chips and turkey jerky? #SoCal

We’ve also seen some general “back to the grind” tweets.

@ewrote - End of our first week back. S5 is going to be insane. But then, that's #TeenWolf , eh?

Recently Jeff Davis explained that the story will be a 20 episode arc which is something they’ve not done with the series before. Prior seasons were single stories told over 12 episodes. He says they’re already involved in what promises to be a long process.

“We complete our outlines in the Writers’ Room. Whereas, in most TV, a single writer is sent off to do an outline and then a script, I like to complete the outlines in our Writers’ Room. That way, everyone is involved in the crafting of the story. You may see one person’s name on an episode but each writer will have ideas within that episode.”

With a February start date, we can expect filming to flow much as it did with Season 4 – but over a longer period of time.

Working two production units pretty much non-stop, Teen Wolf managed to make 12 episodes between Mid-February and July this year. They spent about 90 days actually working on set during the 4 and 1/2 months. If they work the same way, Season 5 should (barring any extended hiatus) be finished about 8 months after they start – August or September 2015.

The February start date means the first episode would be ready for air as early as June 2015. There’s no guarantee MTV plans to start airing new episodes then, but they could. It all comes down to what the network decides to do with their schedule.

HowlerCon

The latest in the seemingly never-ending series of Teen Wolf conventions is set for this weekend in New Jersey.

HowlerCon takes place over 48 hours (Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon) at the Newark Airport Hilton in Elizabeth, NJ and will include much of what we’ve come to expect from these smaller conventions. There will be lots of one-on-one time with the actors through meet and greets, photo sessions and panel discussions.

The line-up is better than many we’ve seen lately with Tyler Hoechlin and Holland Roden set to appear. We’ll also see Charlie Carver, JR Bourne, Linden Ashby, Melissa Ponzio and Orny Adams. This con also features a rare appearance by Haley Webb (Jennifer Blake) from Season 3(a).

Of course Eaddy Mays will be there too because she’s at everything. To paraphrase the apostle “For where two or three have gathered together in Teen Wolf’s name, Eaddy Mays is there in their midst.”

If you need more incentive to check out one of these smaller conventions – take a look at this video scrapbook from last month’s Beacon Chills Event in Orlando, Florida.

You know you want to go do that!

More META

Wikia User Calicokat continues this week with her series of articles introducing folks to the "META" concept of Teen Wolf. It is proving to be one of the more interesting aspects of Teen Wolf Fandom.

There are many facets (as there are with each portion of the fandom) but the simple premise behind the META movement is that there is a hidden narrative across the seasons. These articles are not designed to be a comprehensive treatise on the subject. We're only touching on the basics.

Part 2: Through a Glass, Darkly

By Calicokat

Last week, in part one of the META Teen Wolf series, I talked about the show's use of water and the possibility of an malevolent, aquatic entity moving beneath the surface and behind the scenes. This week I take a look at a phenomenon marked by sets that change significantly from scene to scene, reversed images and characters who appear or disappear in an instant.
Some speculate that these are not mere changes in set dressings but are, instead, pointing to shift between different dimensions.

Eye Candy Features Teen Wolf DNA

MTV’s new show Eye Candy debuts January 12th at 10pm. That’s a Monday, meaning the Victoria Justice cyber-crime procedural is getting Teen Wolf’s regular broadcast slot.

That’s not all the new show is taking from Beacon Hills, they also jacked one of our favorite writers/directors – Christian Taylor, our most well-known director and our Director of Photography too.

Taylor wrote or directed some of the most memorable Teen Wolf episodes including Motel California, De-Void, Riddled, and my personal favorite Abomination. We’ve reported previously that he was tapped to fix Eye Candy after the original pilot bombed with network officials. He stayed to oversee operations at Eye Candy’s Brooklyn production office during the full 10 episode shooting schedule.

We’ve learned Taylor also had a hand in writing or co-writing every script, suggesting we have a great deal to look forward to come January.

Joining Taylor behind the camera for the pilot and at least one additional episode is Teen Wolf Director Russell Mulcahy. He’s been responsible for the overall look and feel of Teen Wolf from the very start and is a deft hand at making cinematic shows on cable TV budgets. Eye Candy also picked up visual support from David Daniel, Director of Photography for Teen Wolf Seasons 3 and 4. The DP is responsible for bringing the director’s vision to life with the right shots, lens, lights etc.

I actually can’t wait to see what these three talented guys do with Manhattan and Brooklyn as a backdrop.
